But why does it take a changing of a digit to give people inspiration? If you want to do something, surely you just do it??? It shouldn't. But I guess, if you started at " day 1 " of the year, you could use the calender year to map any progress. I didn't do anything NYE. I had to be up at 5am the following morning, with a 70km drive to a store I'm doing some relief time at over the NYE period. I didn't make any resolutions. Over the last year, I've been reading a lot of hippie stuff about wellness, motivation, success and what not. If anything, I'm thinking about another overseas trip this year. If anything, whats changed in the last 18 months, is, I want to start doing things for me.. travel with the Mrs, life shouldn't be about going into the same building every day and doing the same mundane tasks over and over. It's a bit of Walter Mitty thing.

Most of the stuff I owned, was just stuff. Since March of 2011, I've been overseas 5 times and had a huge amount of adventure, seen a few wonders of the world and had some life changing moments. Way important than throwing more stuff on the pile.

Way important than throwing more stuff on the pile. There's a scene in Good Will Hunting that really sums it up. You seem to always run into these guys, who think they know everything. They've watched the movies, read the books.. in turn, they think they can tell you about life. Yet have never really stepped out of the 100 square miles they call home. They can tell you all about WWII, but can't describe to you that overbearing felling of sadness you get standing in the middle of what was once a concentration camp. They've read the Da Vinci Code, but can't tell you what the walk from The Louvre to the Eiffel tower is like. I learnt more in a month about the world and myself than in a lifetime of Wikipedia, books and school and had some incredible experiences and memories.

I think it's very much a personal thing. Some people take so much from traveling, whereas others don't have that bug. I don't think traveling makes someone a better person, or a more well-rounded person for that matter.
I've been there, and done that, but for a few of my friends, traveling is their greatest accomplishment, and at times, they can act as though they are the only person to ever walk to ruins of Rome or Pompeii, or to sleep in a centuries-old castle. Basically, everyone does it.
Traveling is one thing - taking something meaningful from it, other than stating that you've been there, is another.
And I specify, this is not directed at anyone here at all. I just get it ad-nauseum from people who have filled a void in their life with travel and believe everyone else should be just like them. Diff'rent strokes, baby... diff'rent strokes.

Diff'rent strokes, baby... diff'rent strokes. I felt the same way for a long time, it felt very much like a material thing as compared to a learning or cultural experience whenever you heard stories. I think if anything it widens your perspective, it's very easy to fall into the trap of your own little world, it's culture or lack of and seeing and doing the same things every day which can easily become something of a comfort zone for a lot of people. Breaking free only for a few weeks can be something of an accomplishment. Does it make you excited about life, if it does, do it. If not, try something that does.

Some very good points here. I have travelled a lot recently too, but i see Bret's point about its not for everyone and some people can get sick of hearing travel stories. Everyone is different. Its like when people ask me why i havent gotten married and had kids when everyone else in my family has. Was engaged twice and didnt work out, so i realised im not meant to get married and its not for me. Sure i was upset when the relationship ended but it wasnt heart breaking. For me, travel is the best thing i've done and i try and take something from all my trips. Its not always about the big adventure as some of the small things mean as much as the big stuff.
I said to rayth once that i wanna do something for my 50th and he said why should that birthday be any more special. And he's right. It shouldnt. You should just do something, whether its travel, sports, get married, go to a gym, because its what you really want, and it gives you that buzz. I had a friend who recently followed Bon Jovi around to most of their Aussie shows and she said that means as much to her as anything else she's done.

Laugh if you like, I'm often an bastard of a bloke, but I tell you this is heartfelt. I usually work my ass of working, don't treat myself to much luxury. I was walking hand in hand with both my girls, birds & butterfly around in Broome at Cable Beach & I got all choked up. Similar in Bali, just the Mrs & me, this tasty omelette was made for me, looked & tasted perfect, again I got all choked up.
Most holidays I find a quiet moment to let the blokey defences down.

I got offered a Bachelor of Social Work at UWS Parramatta in the main round last night which was my first preference. absolutely stoked!! considering no HSC and only a cert IV under my belt and relevant work experience that was apparently not judged due to the document being non verified. I need to brush up on my grammar in between now and end of feb with some kiddie iPad apps but if Uni is anything like college rules or dare dorm videos I am going to love it.

Some may say its cruel to mock something quite tragic but as you get older you pay for the mistakes of your younger days. It looks like some higher power is trying to strike her down. A innocent lollipop lady or a devo that had jerry lawyer do hideous things with a trophy? The stories I have heard about this woman including receiving poor quality tapes her back in the day plus ripping of kids for $$ on tapes in recall a sell thread in which the legendary cammo called her and her now deceased husband said it was a pizza shop in regards to members not receiving their items

I was talking to a girl at work tonight, she's young, 21 I think. We were having a normal conversation when a "Curb Your Enthusiasm" moment occurred. I can't remember the context of the conversation but she actually said "hash tag it was worth it". The gap between myself and the younger generation is widening.
FYI. One of my favourite Curb Your Enthusiasm episodes was the one when a woman used to say L - O - L instead of laughing. #larrydavid #curbyourenthusiasm #loveit
