This week I would like to start a discussion on labor disputes.
The NHL is locked out the NFL referees were locked out due to labor disputes.
What side of the fence are you on?
Since the owners buy a team do they get to decide solely who gets what?
When one owner signs a player for above average wage do the players have the right to ask for the same amount?
Are the players greedy or the owners Scrooges?
Can you put a fair percentage on players wages?
Have you ever had a wage negotiation?
Please Discuss!

I wont answer any of your questions, but I will reference the recent labor dispute in Melbourne, and union mentality in general.
If it's justified, it's ok. If you're getting completely jipped and again, it's justified.. it's ok.
To reference the recent dispute.. a dispute over union stickers on lunch boxes.. come on!
I tend to deal with the union time to time, and what I don't like seeing, even in other industries, are the workers using the union as a weapon rather than a tool for negotiation. You tell a worker " no " or give them a reasonable instruction and to hear " I'm calling the union " just boils your blood. It's pathetic and it's usually used by the people who are simple out to get an easier ride in life.
What you're seeing in the NHL, and the NFL, and even the NBA a few years ago.. is exactly the same deal. Throwing a tantrum on a much larger scale.

Agree with Nate regarding use of the union and trying for unreasoable things. if they're realistic and within their rights, of course go for it.
In terms of big sports in States... I find it really hard to sympathise with the players. They're making astronomical salaries - even the basic wage is far beyond what the average worker would dream of receiving.
They can slant it as though it is owners being greedy, but fuck me... these are the guys who outlayed big dollars for the team to begin with. It's their right to reap the rewards and make a profit.
