Was reading the other day that the Patrick Swayze movie Point Break is being remade (or rebooted as they say these days). This was reportedly the character that Raven drew some of his inspiration from as Swayze was the charismatic leader Bohdi. kind of like a zen master.
There are currently over 75 movies or tv shows in the works to be rebooted. Alien, cliffhanger, Escape From New York, American Pie, Porky's, Honey I Shrunk The Kids, Police Academy, Robocop and The Warriors.
Its too easy now to get an old movie and just do a quick remake with hi tech gadgets and special effects, turn comic books into movies or just trot out a sequel. or prequel. Or they'll just make a normal movie and 3D it. Whats wrong with coming up with something original and fresh or arent they paying you guys enough? Dont get me wrong, some remakes are pretty good, but some are just rubbish. and if you do too many spin offs it could ruin the brand. Case in point, Star Wars. The original 3 were classics, the recent 3, too long winded and drawn out.
So im gonna throw it out there and see what everyone else thinks about this.

It has both pro's and cons.
The shit movies can be enhanced, but the classics should be left alone.
I'd rather they make a related movie/spin off, then remake an original.

Good ideas being brought back for younger generations to see is not necessarily a bad thing. I guess if it's butchered then you tarnish the original.
Sequels on the other hand can get a bit much. If there is a successful movie chances are there will be a sequel for it in the not to distant future. There are some great sequels out there but there are probably about 3 times more inferior ones released.
Just a few off the top of my head.
American Pie How many more can they make? I can't even laugh at the first one now it's been ruined.
Saw Wow that first Saw was amazing! We're up to around 6 now aren't we, lost interest after 3.
Matrix OK I didn't hate the sequels but didn't think they were much compared to the first. I'm a massive fan of the first, it's still one of my favorite movies of all time. The rest were pretty much how, hum.
Police Academy Those that grew up around the time it was released would have enjoyed the first 2 or 3 movies the same people would be wanting to throw up after watching the later ones.
I'll think of some really good remakes a little later.

well....i wonder if you can blame the reality tv generation were going through at the moment...maybe studio's cant be bothered hunting down fresh, new scripts....fair enough re-doing some of the 70's classics ...the remake of the The Mechanic was brilliant......but friggin hell, they gone and re-done Spiderman, whats that 10 years old??....geez they'll be re-doing Harry Potter and Star Wars before we know it

I pretty much agree with every thing that's been said as above.
Other factors include the technology we have today, as compared to 20-30 years ago, even 10 years ago. It's incredible what can be achieved really. And when you start talking about the possibilities, you can see why so many producers want to recreate older films.
Another thing is, I guess if you're debating ' for rebooting ' is, a lot of the older films just don't hold up over time. Take anything from the original Batman series of the 1990s, outside of Batman Returns.. they're absolute jokes compared to the Batman series of the 2000s.
While other great movies, two of which I am a fan of.. The Warriors and Escape from New York.. Warriors today looks like a cheap 1970s exploitation flick, while Escape from New York is a corny slow action movie.
Realistically I don't think The Warriors is a good enough story to warrant a reboot in 2011+.
I'm betting RoboCop will be good. No joke, if it remains a parody of the media like the original, it will be great. Oh and gritty and violent as shit considering the decay of modern day Detroit. Remember, no one gave a shit about Iron Man 6 years ago.

I'm looking forward to the new American Pie, apparently it will star the original cast, not the B grade shitfest actors in the last few.
But yes, Hollywood fucking sucks. The Crow is being remade............ Seriously, The Crow??? How can you top the original, are they STUPID!?
As for the Warriors, it's one of my fave movies of all time, so I'm pretty peeved. Apparently they are going to modernise it and include current gangs in it. That sounds all fine and dandy, but dont call it The Warriors, give it a new freaking name! I hate discussing movies where people always ask, "Are you talking about the new one?"

You'd think the lack of success of the several sequels would tell you, it's a bad idea. I think it could go either way. The right cast, the right lead actor and the right person directing, it could be great. The original Crow by no means was an exceptional film, if anything it had one fantastic performance from Lee, and that's what a decent Crow remake requires. Crow:Salvation was decent however. From wiki. It's a "reinvention", much like every single Crow sequel.

Just saw the Lion King (in 3D) was the number 1 film in the USA this weekend. Not a remake...the original film just in 3D.
That should answer the question of Hollywood being lazy.

i liked the Batman movies from the 90's. watched the 1st one last week and Jack Nicholson as The Joker is awesome.
Escape From New York is dated, i think Escape From LA is much better.
If they're gonna remake American Pie AND Porkys arent they the same thing? bunch of horny teenagers trying to get laid.

It's not really all that lazy, just really smart. For a generation of kids who grew up in the late 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s.. any remakes instigates some sort of interest again, and usually turns into dollars in releases of the originals, Blu-Ray releases, box-sets, etc.

Poster on a bus, today. FFS! Never cared for looking at the original, either... At least it's not just Kevin Bacon dancing with himself.

One exception I can think of in recent history That was pretty cool. I guess JJ Abrahms deserves some credit. He created ALIAS & Lost, too. By my similar rationale Joss Whedon should be a success directing The Avengers. A guy that knows about character development, crazy action & strong female characters. Good pedigree of TV with Buffy, Angel, Firefly TV/Serenity (movie) & the underrated ill fated Dollhouse. He's even written a few cool X-Men comic book stories. One thing I've still been waiting for Hollywood to delve into: Six Billion Dollar Man A cool hip black action hero - apart from Will Smith A sexy kick-ass chick hero
